All types of drawings require drawing equipment but there is specific kind of equipment for different kind of drawing.

The most important and basic drawing equipment includes paper and pencil but of course according to the different uses also the pencils and papers will change. Paper and pencils for technical drawing are different than paper and pencils for drawing a cartoon. Pencils, both simple and refillable generally range from 4H – very hard to 4B – very soft. If you’re using your drawing equipment for artistic drawing or graphics, that range of hardness will give you a range of possibilities to create different effects. Hard pencils are useful for drawing exact details, and soft pencils are better for shading.

Two other important items for drawing equipment, when we talk about pencils, are sharpener and eraser. Sharpeners come in different styles, the most simple ones for standard size pencils and more sophisticated with another size possibility, with a container for the shavings, with a mechanism or an electric one. Despite the variety I find it hard to pick a good sharpener that doesn’t break the pencil core too often, so as with many others, my drawing equipment includes a craft knife.

As I mentioned before, our drawing equipment should also include eraser. The common white erasers you can get anywhere will generally be good only for hard or medium pencils. When the eraser is very hard it is actually for erasing pen’s ink, and it does it by slightly pilling a layer of the paper, so it is not very good as drawing equipment for artistic drawing or graphics. Very soft pencils need a very soft kind of eraser, similar to plasticine, which is not rubbed against the paper but rather pushed against it so it attaches to it the unwanted lead. Since it attaches the lead to it, you have to make sure that you’re using a clean eraser, and clean it from time to time.

For graphics and calligraphy ink fountain pens may be required as part of drawing  equipment. And of course, some of the most important items of technical drawing equipment are fine pen, a ruler, a T-square, Set Square, a compass, a protractor and board clips.
